  • 12.05.2015 Austrian Robotics Workshop 2015

    NES has organized and hosted the Austrian Robotics Workshop 2015 on 7th and 8th of May in Klagenfurt. What started as an Austrian Workshop grew into an international workshop. We had around 80 participants and the speakers came from eight different countries to present and discuss their work in the field of robotics. Two keynote speakers have introduced their research in thrilling fields in robotics. Sabine Hauert from Bristol Robotics Laboratory and University of Bristol explained the development of nano-robots and how they may support medical treatment. Werner Huber from BMW Group Research and Technology presented the self-driving cars, which have received a lot of media coverage lately. In addition, industry and academia have presented and demonstrated their demos and posters during an interesting joint session. We have invited people to observe live demonstrations and discuss recent advancements face to face. Next year, Austrian Robotics Workshop 2016 will be held in Wels.

  • 23.02.2015 US Patent granted

    Our second patent with the title Apparatus and method for generating an overview image of a plurality of images using a reference plane has been granted with Patent No. US 8,902,308 B2.

  • 05.02.2015 Second demo with autonomous multiple UAVs

    We have extended our demo successfully by increasing the number of UAVs and adding a real-time video streaming of the detected target. See the video of the demo here.

    Our patent with the title Apparatus and method for generating an overview image of a plurality of images using an accuracy information has been granted with Patent No. US 8,797,400 B2.

  • 24.10.2014 Students visiting our lab

    Today about 70 students from HTL Mössingerstraße have visited our lab. We believe that these types of interaction will help the young generation to have a better understanding for choosing their future path or career.

  • 08.08.2014 Demo - Fully autonomous collaboration

    We tested our fully autonomous multi-UAV collaboration. In this demo the UAVs are following a pre-planned route and as soon as a red object is detected, the first UAV hovers and the second UAV flies to the relay position.

  • 28.10.2013 Visiting the DARC side of New York

    From 11 to 13 October two members of our team attended the Drone and Aerial Robotic Conference (DARC) in New York City. The conference hosted a very diverse community related to the UAV technology. Driven by the same passion for this emerging technology, our team members connected with experts of other fields and discussed such problems as: research and development, regulations as well as public perception. This was another opportunity to talk about the impact of technology in the society and to think about new exciting applications.

  • 04.09.2013 SINUS team went to the AscTec training

    Last week five members of our team attended a very exciting training at the company “Ascending Technologies GmbH”, one of the leading manufacturers of multicopters. The training included the main aspects of the UAV system: manual steering, hardware and software design. We have practised steering a UAV in the GPS and height-control modes. In addition to the training, we have seen the new drone Fire-Fly and got some insights about the new software that will be released in the close future.

  • 24.07.2013 AAAI Video Competition 2013

    This year we have participated in the video competition of AAAI 2013. Our video called "Flying High – Autonomous Multi-UAV System for Wide Area Coverage" was about the technologies and algorithms developed by our team. It includes aspects from route planning, networking, and image processing. We are happy to announce that our video was nominated for best student video and it took the second place.

  • 12.07.2013 Research Days 2013

    From 8th - 12th of July Research Days were held at the NES institute, University of Klagenfurt. This year’s Research Days were focused on multi-UAV systems. Experts from different research areas of multi-UAV systems were invited from all over the world. The Research Days, not only being informative with invited talks, panels, group works and demos, were also a lot of fun. The informal atmosphere of a drone racing competition and many social events connected people better than NOKIA.

    We would like to congratulate Saeed Yahyanejad with the successful defence of his PhD thesis on "Orthorectified Mosaicking of Images from Small scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicles". The defence was brilliant and, as expected, he got distinction. Congratulations!!!

  • 14.01.2013 SINUS kick-off meeting

    Today we had the first meeting within the SINUS project where we have discussed the next steps of our future work. This project will be focused on the interaction between the four components of a multi-UAV system: UAV platforms, analysis of the sensor data, aerial networking and UAV coordination. It is very exciting to start a new project in the field of collaborative UAVs!

    Yesterday LakesideLabs held the last meeting of the project. The format of this meeting was very unique. Instead of the usual discussion room, the participants found themselves in an unexpected setting. The room was set up with challenges for a UAV competition. The informal gathering was an entertaining closure of a successful project.

  • 05.07.2012 Nature supports our Multi-UAV flight

    Today and tomorrow members of the advisory board of Lakeside Labs GmbH visit us for their annual meeting. We took this chance to demonstrate work of our multi-UAV system. To make it more straightforward, the flight plan was made for the whole area of Lakeside Park (approximately 4 ha) for 3 heterogeneous UAVs, 2 Pelicans and 1 MD4-200. Interestingly, today it was raining but right before the demonstration it has stopped and there was almost no wind! So, we could accomplish the demo successfully. The whole mission took less than 15 minutes in total, i.e. to set up the system and perform the flights. At the end of the demo we've got the best award - the positive feedback given by the visiting professors.

  • 07.05.2012 Austrian Robotics Workshop: challenges and their solutions in robotics

    Recently we have presented our current research results at the Austrian Robotics Workshop in Graz, Austria. Researchers from all around Austria and several neighbouring countries met to exchange ideas about the current state-of-the-art in robotics domain. First day presentations were followed by a banquet at company Knapp AG where we were served by a team of robots! The second day was ended by a panel discussion and a fascinating demo by a team of fire-fighters and remotely controlled robots.

  • 30.04.2012 Drones assist rescuers

    We took part in a big fire-fighters practise in Stausee Soboth. Around 700 rescuers from Slovenia and Austria (states Styria and Carinthia) demonstrated their ability to extinguish a fire in a very complex terrain. Our drones Falcon 8 and MD4-1000 assisted them from the air by providing overview images at the command centre in a real time. Afterwards coordinators of the mission said that they were satisfied with performance of our system and proposed to collaborate more in future.

  • 20.04.2012 A new UAV arrived

    Recently we have got a new drone, Asctec Falcon 8 from Ascending Technologies. Shortly after that we could perform the first test flight where the drone was very stable even in quite high wind! Therefore, we plan to use it already in our upcoming life demonstration.

    Yesterday, Franz and Markus presented the business plan for a spin-off company of the cDrones project at the Build! advisory board. We are happy to announce that the spin-off has been accepted to join the Build! business incubator.

    Our business idea for a spin-off company of our research project was awarded the second place in the Build! business ideas competition. Thanks to Franz and all the other people involved in developing the business idea.

  • 12.03.2012 Our two patents are finally published

    Recently our two patents on a construction of an overview image were finally published. These are the patents with the titles “Apparatus and method for generating an overview image of a plurality of images using a reference plane” and “Apparatus and method for generating an overview image of a plurality of images using an accuracy information” by Bernhard Rinner, Markus Quaritsch, Daniel Wischounig-Strucl and Saeed Yahyanejad.

  • 28.11.2011 cDrones in "Kaernten heute"

    We were invited to demonstrate the collaboration methods between small-scale UAVs explored and studied in the cDrones project to the Austrian TV broadcast. Two heterogeneous UAVs were deployed to monitor the entrance of the Alpen-Adria Universitaet Klagenfurt. Besides an everyday students life UAVs recorded a discussion of researchers and their industrial partners about used technologies and achieved results.

    This video will be broadcasted in programme “Kaernten heute” on channel ORF2 within the series “Bildungsland Kaernten” (“Educational chances in Carinthia”). This issue covers research in the area of Informatics and Information Technologies ongoing in Klagenfurt University.

  • 14.10.2011 cDrones Research Day

    Today we had a Research Day where many issues were raised. Our team members and master students gave presentations on their progress during the last months. Comparison of picture point calculation algorithms showed that now we can obtain 100% coverage plan with a small number of photos within a short time. Imaging part was focused on infrared (IR) imaging and registration of IR and RGB images. A lot of work has been done on methods to find features on the same elevation level for mosaicking pictures. The colleagues in the work package on Wireless Communication reported on measurements of wireless channel for ground-to-UAV communication. Now planning of continuous missions in a static environment is possible. These presentations and discussions logically lead to plans for the next year.

    Saeed Yahyanejad received the Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE International Symposium on Robotic and Sensor Environments (ROSE 2011) in Montreal. In the awarded paper Incremental, Orthorectified and Loop-independent Mosaicking of Aerial Images Taken by micro UAVs, the authors Saeed Yahyanejad, Markus Quaritsch and Bernhard Rinner survey challenges of incremental image mosaicking and improve orthorectification by migitating identified errors.
